You know those little “trending” news stories that appear on the sidebar of Facebook? Well the one that caught my eye this morning was, “Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend was married to another man when she died.” Because, of course, the important parts of this woman’s tragic story are that she a) dated Jim Carrey and b) was married (gasp!) to another man. P.S – she was separated and dating…not so unusual or scandalous.
This reminds me of L’Wren Scott’s death in 2014 when she was carelessly reduced to “Mick Jagger’s longtime girlfriend” never mind that she was an accomplished 49-year old stylist and designer in her own right, who didn’t even meet Jagger until 2001.
And who was one of the first to point this out? Bianca Jagger. You know, Mick’s ex-wife. Or, if you care, a social and human rights advocate and former actress who serves as a Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador, Founder and Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, member of the Executive Director’s Leadership Council of Amnesty International USA, and a trustee of the Amazon Charitable Trust.
Always a class act, Bianca initially tweeted: heartbroken to learn of the loss of the lovely and talented L’Wren Scott. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May she rest in peace.
Before adding: Appalled at the sexist reporting, lack of compassion and lack of respect for L’Wren’s accomplishments by most world media #everydaysexism
The media could have addressed Cathriona White’s apparent suicide as a tragedy and a mental health story – but sadly, a celebrity link and misleading allusion to adultery won out.
I suppose I could relate this back to the theme of my blog and say that this is one of the things about our world that scares me regarding the possibility of raising a daughter.
But mostly it just pisses me off.
